I thought it'd be neat to have a horizontal color gradient where each frequency bar could be colored differently as well.

Anyone who has done graphics design or messed with a graphics program has probably seen color swatches. Where you'd have X axis be the spectrum and the Y axis be the intensity.

I was thinking it'd look something similar to: https://www.reachabovemedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/RGB_color_chart.jpg

I agree, maybe also manually set color per bar? Should not be to hard, will look into it when i get time.

haven't figured out how to handle it when both vertical and horizontal is set, maybe just blend them and make the vertical colors transparent at bottom and more and more opaque as it goes upward

I'm good with that, especially if it can fade up from black/transparent so that it blends with the frequency row.

also i think it looks nicer if it increases the contrast against background and not blends in towards the background:

Yeah, that top one is a little too dark near the bottom. My current setup looks like this:

Anyway as long as it's user configurable it shouldn't matter much.
