3.75.6.2024031 bootet nicht von USB #2688

Describe the issue you are experiencing

Hallo,

ich nutze einen Pi4 mit USB-SSD Boot und der RPI-RF-Mod.

Heute habe ich von der 3.73.9.20240130 auf die 3.75.6.20240316 geupdated bzw. das versucht - leider erfolglos.

Nach dem "automatischen" Update hat das System nicht mehr gebootet. Hatte da leider noch keinen Monitor zur Hand, kann also zu Fehlermeldungen o.ä. leider nichts sagen.

Dann die 3.75.6 per Etcher auf die SSD geschrieben - das System hat nicht gebootet mit Meldung "Firmware not found".

Das habe ich dann mehrmals versucht mit immer gleichem Ergebnis.
Mit dem Raspberry Pi Imager übrigens gleiches Ergebnis.

Dann die 3.73.9 geflashed und das System hat wieder gebootet.
Backup eingespielt und das Update auf die 3.75.6 erneut probiert.
Das System hängt dann in einer Bootschleife. Ich habe davon ein Video gemacht: https://www.file-upload.net/download-15286506/PXL_20240319_1521190892.mp4.html

Aktuell läuft somit die 3.73.9 wieder problemlos und ich hoffe auf ein baldiges Update zur Problemlösung :)

Bitte den genauen Typ (USB identifier) des USB<>SSD Adapters hier spezifizieren/niederlegen.

In deinem Video sieht man diese relevante Stelle. D.h. er kommt ja bis Starting kernel...:

Bricht dann aber wohl wie es aussieht ab. Um das nun genauer analysieren zu können bräuchte es in der Tat den genauen Typ dieses USB<>SSD Adapters samt USB identifieren. Dazu bitte mal lsusb in der lauffähigen Version von RaspberryMatic hier zeigen und auch die Ausgaben des Kommandos dmesg. Bitte aber nicht als Screenshot sondern inline in code-passagen hier als Kommentar.

Den CUL-Stick hatte ich übrigens testweise auch ausgestöpselt, der hat also nicht reingegrätscht.

Ich hatte ein sehr ähnliches Problem übrigens schon mal (#2240). Ich könnte mir laienhaft vorstellen, das da ein Bug im Kernel gefixed wurde, der jetzt wieder da ist.

So ganz kann das nicht stimmen. Wie in der dmesg Ausgabe von @Troubadix zu sehen hat er einen Pi4 mit 4GB RAM. Siehe:

Ja, gut.
Mein Test bezog sich natürlich auf mein Setup mit dem ich Bootprobleme auf dem Pi4B 8GB verifizieren konnte.
Daher die Nachfrage nach der genutzten Pi4B Version.
Im Forum ist ja auch zu lesen das diverse 4GB-Versionen weiterhin durchbooten.
Auch werden hier ja 2 Probleme genannt die möglicherweise, aber nicht zwingend, zusammenhängen.

Das Problem mit den Adaptern ist primär der UAS-Mode. Das kann man umgehen wenn man die USB-SSD an USB2 hängt.
Bei USB3 muss dann eben die Blacklist greifen.

Hier mal der dmesg output des, mit dem Workaround gestarteten, Pi4B 8GB.
Am Monitor ist nichts auffälliges zu sehen, statt sich nach "starting Kernel" zu resetten bootet er korrekt weiter.

Edit: sehe gerade das ich den Nightly mit Kernel 6.6.21 gebootet habe. Der bootete aber gestern ohne den Workaround auch nicht, kann also als "Problemlöser" ausgeschlossen werden.

Ich sehe gerade im Changelog für die neue Version den Eintrag

add kernel upstream patch to increase usb storgae quirks character limit to 256 characters so that the currently specified USB quirks string does not result in a kernel bootup error

Betrifft das diesen meinen Bug? Hab leider gerade keine Zeit, das auszutesten und würde mich daher über eine kurze Bestätigung freuen :)

Nein, denn dann wäre das Issue hier ja weiter bearbeitet oder eben als gefixt geschlossen worden.

Bei einer RM hat man doch generell einen geringen i/o da würde man doch kaum merken wenn das USB-Device mit "mass_storage" statt uas läuft.
Man bräuchte die quirks-Liste nicht pflegen und könnte theoretisch jeden Adapter direkt nutzen da die (nach meiner Erfahrung) alle mit "mass_storage" harmonisieren.

Bei HA-OS ist das was anderes, da hier ggf. hoher i/o für die Datenbanken gebraucht wird.

Prinzipiell keine schlechte Idee. Die Frage wäre nur was das für mögliche Nebenwirkungen haben könnte. Das kann ich aktuell nicht/schwer überblicken. Aber versuchen könnte man es ggf. Muss ich mal schauen ob man UAS einfach durch wegnehmen von CONFIG_USB_UAS in der kernel config ausknipsen kann.

Inzwischen gibt es ja eine neue Version, bootet die?
Im Forum Forum gab es wieder 2 Berichte mit USB-Boot-Problemen beim Pi4B.
Hab mir das aber noch nicht angeguckt.

Ich habe drei USB Controller mit denen es ohne Probleme klappt. Ab besten funktioniert es mit USB-Sticks.
Bei zwei USB -> M.2 Controller gibt es Probleme das entweder der Bootvorgang nicht korrekt startet oder die Raspberrymatic im StartProzess der Lan-Controller IP Zuweisung hängen bleibt.
Somit würde ich grundsätzlich sages das es keine Probleme mit einem Pi4 und der Raspberrymatic per USB Boot gibt.

Zumindest den Pi4B-8GB bekomme ich weiterhin nicht von USB->SATA-SSD gebootet, egal welchen Adapter ich nehme.
2GB und 4GB booten hingegen von allen Adaptern, also ist m.E. der Status seit 3.75.6.20240316 unverändert.
Somit bin ich auch der Meinung das es bei Pi4B-2GB / Pi4B-4GB keine grundsätzlichen USB-Boot-Probleme gibt.

das Problem des USB BOOT ist mit einer FAT32 SD Karte lösbar, aber!
Ich kann nun kein Update einspielen.

Das Update endet im start des recoverymodus.
Ein Update von dort aus gibt interessante Informationen.

Da hilft wohl nur die SSD direkt mit der neuen Version zu flashen, dann mit Workaround-SD zu starten und dann ein Backup restoren.

Hallo,
ich habe eine Raspberrymatic mit einem Pi 4 mit 4GB und einem über Kabel abgesetzten Funkmodul MOD-RPI-PCB. Das Betriebssystem läuft über einen USB-Stick in einem USB 2.0-Anschluss. Die Version 20240601 bootet bei mir von USB nur mit dem Workaround „leere FAT-formatierte SD-Karte“. Versuchsweise habe ich mal die Version 20240316 eingesteckt, sie bootet von USB auch ohne SD-Karte. Ich habe es mit zwei unterschiedlichen USB-Sticks probiert, einer mit 64GB der andere mit 32GB, beide bringen das gleiche Ergebnis. Beim „Hängen“ leuchtet die rote LED ständig, die grüne ist ca. 12-15sec aus und dann ca. 4-5sec ein, das wiederholt sich immer wieder. Auf meinem zweiten Pi4 ebenfalls mit 4GB aber mit einem Funkmodul RPI-RF-MOD zeigt sich das gleiche Ergebnis.
Die Ausgabe auf einem Monitor konnte ich nur als Video aufnehmen und daraus einen Screenshot machen. Dunkler Bildschirm für ca. 15 sec, Meldung für 1-2sek, dunkler Bildschirm für ca. 15 sec, Meldung für 1-2sek etc.

Im oben stehenden Screenshot meldet der Raspi "SD: card detected". Es war aber definitiv keine SD-Karte im Schacht. Könnte das ein Hinweis auf die Problematik sein?

Hmm, das kommt dann aber vom Bootloader und nicht von RaspberryMatic.
Mein Pi4B-4GB bootet auch weiterhin problemlos von USB->SATA-SSD.

im Argon ONE Case mit Argon One M.2 SATA Expansion Board BKey B+MKey Version 06182021V2.3
über
(USB3 -> SSD)
in Betrieb zu nehmen und bekomme es nicht hin. Bootet, dann Blue Screen und dann fängt er nochmal an.
Habe auch das Gehäuse schon 3 mal demontiert, da es aussah wie ein Kurzschluß.
Das konnte ich aber ausschließen, da Rasperry Pi OS 64 ohne Porblme läuft.

Besteht mit dem 8GB noch immer das Problem mit dem Bootlop?
Oder fehlt mir hier der Argon USB Treiber in der Rasperrymatic?

Sollte es der Treiber sein, kann mich da jemand unterstützen wie ich den installieren kann?
Bin leider Windows User und mit Raspberry und Linux nicht gar so bewandert.

Das kann ich auch bestätigen

Also für den Pi4B-8GB konnte ich inzwischen das Problem identifizieren und auch eine temporäre Lösung (nicht die SD-Karten Methode) finden.
Da bei einem Zentralenfirmware Update/Downgrade das /boot - FS überschrieben wird lässt sich das aber nicht produktiv einsetzen.
Ob sich damit das Problem beim P4B-4GB (das meiner kurioserweise nicht hat) auch beheben lässt müsste jemand mit Expertise testen.

wenn du mir kurz beschreibst, wie ich einen Downgrade des Bootloaders mache (per SSH oder balenaEtcher?) und wo ich den alten Bootloader finde, könnte ich das auf einem meiner beider Raspberrymatic mit Pi4B-4GB testen?!

Ich habe das ganz simpel gemacht.
Die 3.73.9.20240130 geflasht und (man hat ja mit Windows zugriff auf die Boot-Partition) die u-boot.bin auf den PC kopiert.
Dann die 3.75.7.20240601 geflasht und mit der u-boot.bin vom PC die auf der Boot-Partition überschrieben.
Danach die SSD an den Pi4B-8GB und Voila.

So, jetzt habe ich mal wie Baxxy13 beschrieben hat getestet:

  1. Natürlich KEINE SD-Karte im Schacht!
  2. RaspberryMatic-3.73.9.20240130-rpi4 geflasht und damit gebootet: --> normaler Start, „heartbeat“ kommt
  3. Aus RaspberryMatic-3.73.9.20240130-rpi4 „u-boot.bin“ vom 30.01.2024 auf PC kopiert
  4. RaspberryMatic-3.75.7.20240601-rpi4 geflasht und gebootet: --> kein „heartbeat“ --> hängt wie weiter oben beschrieben.
  5. Vom PC „u-boot.bin“ vom 30.01.2024 in RaspberryMatic-3.75.7.20240601-rpi4 die „u-boot.bin“ vom 01.06.2024 überschrieben: normaler Start, „heartbeat“ kommt!
    Auch wenn es nicht bei allen Pi4B-4GB auftritt, scheint er wohl doch das gleiche Problem wie der Pi4B-8GB zu haben?!

Nein, könnte er nicht. Besser den root-cause in U-Boot finden statt hier was altes zusammenzupatchen...

Ich hatte gestern ein wenig recherchiert, konnte aber nicht so richtig was finden.
Was mich wundert ist der Pi4B-4GB. Meiner bootet problemlos von USB während andere bootloopen.
Grob gesehen sind doch alle Pi4B-4GB identisch.
Außer:

  • Hardware-Revision
  • ggf. Boot-Eprom
  • das verwendete USB-Device (Stick/Adapter)

Naja, zumindest ist nun klar wo man suchen muss. 😉

Ich hab das jetzt auch ausprobiert.

Update über WebUI mit anschließendem Austausch der u-boot.bin klappt nicht. Oder aber ich war zu ungeduldig und hätte länger warten müssen?

Backup machen, aktuelle Raspimatic mit Etcher flashen und direkt danach die u-boot.bin austauschen klappt. Danach das Backup wieder einspielen und alles ist schön.

Wurde der Bug denn schon an die U-Boot-Fahrer gemeldet? Ich finde da keinen Bugtracker.

Immerhin ist jetzt mal die Sicherheitslücke behoben... :)

der letzet Eintrag ist vom 15.07.2024 und das Thema ist noch offen.
Die Version 3.77.6.20240720 bootet auf meinemPI4 8GB noch immer nicht von der angschlossenen USB SSD.
Es funktioniert aber die 3.73 U-Boot.bin einzuspielen, wie oben beschrieben.
Das funktioniert auch ohne Probleme unter Windows.
Eventuell muß das Laufwerk mit der Datenträgerverwaltung eingebunden werden, damit es einen Laufwerksbuchstaben erhält.

Da das Problem somit bei jedem Update wieder auftaucht, meine Frage,
wie sind die Aussichten auf eine Behebung, ist das machbar und wird daran gearbeitet?

Info zur neuen Version der RaspberryMatic: gestern habe ich die Version 3.79.6.20241031 eingespielt. Nach dem Neustart bleibt mein Pi4B-4GB in der Boot-Schleife hängen. Wie von Baxxy13 beschrieben, habe ich dann die „u-boot.bin“ durch die Version vom 30.01.2024 ersetzt. Damit startet meine RaspberryMatic wieder ganz normal.

gibt es einen weg, die Raspberrymatic Software am Windows PC zu bearbeiten und schon dort die U-Boot vom 30.01.2024 einzusetzen?
Ich muß jedesmal den Schrank wegbauen um die USB Brücke von der SSD zum Raspi zu entfernen.
Eine Modifikation und das Online Einspielen wäre daher schon sehr hilfreich.

Ich verstehe ja einerseits das Du das nicht anbieten möchtest.
Andererseits bin ich durch meinen SSD Aufbau jedoch dazu gezwungen die alte U-Boot zu nutzen.

Ist denn hier eine Lösung absehbar?
