Sample Python Code

Please review the code in the following files:

  • data_processing_hate_crime.ipynb and data_processing_us_census.ipynb - Demonstrates the ability to clean and manipulate the shape of data for a business purpose. In these files, FBI Hate Crime data and US Census data is cleaned, transformed and exported to csv files to create a normallized database. Note the database was created using the Python SQLalchemy module. These files are located in the database directory.
  • app.py - Demonstrates ability to move data between two systems. In this file, the Python Flask module is used to connect to either a PostgreSQL or SQLite database, query the database and return data via an API call. There are 4 endpoints, three of which include parameters. Note these calls are made through Javascript. The Javascript files are located in the app/static/js directory.

You can find further information on the overall project in the README.md file.

IMPORTANT The purpose of this project was to redesign and improve an interactive web application developed for a group assignment in UC Berkeley's Data Analytics Boot Camp. I've commented any code that was based on code from one of the members of the group. Due to significant changes I made in the data processiing, database, flask application, and dashboard, almost all of the code was completely rewritten. You can view the original project here if needed. The README.md also highlights changes and improvements.
