Screenshare broken with webRTC and obs

Hi,

I'm using arch with a pipewire + wireplumber system and it stopped working a couple of months ago. I update a lot so I thought it was just that and it would get patched but it's still broken, so looking for a fix.

A couple different things happen on a couple of different apps so I'll try and explain it all but sorry if it doesn't make a lot of sense.

With bitdepth set to 8

For Vesktop, when I try screen sharing with any of the options it brings up the menu once but whatever options I select it closes the menu but doesn't start sharing the screen. Journalctl outputs

and just loops on that until I close Vesktop. After doing that I cannot open the menu again in Vesktop until I restart it.

For OBS, it is the same as that except where it says webrtc it says obs and I can still open the menu and reselect what I am trying to capture. The output is just black though.

With OBS however, on bitdepth 10 it captures the whole screen and regions of the screen just fine, but fails to capture individual windows. When capturing windows the error seems to be the same as above.

I can confirm the issue.

With an identical hardware setup, simply switching to KDE Plasma with Wayland resolved the problem. I was able to get screen sharing working with Vencord (and other applications like Chromium which use webRTC for screen capture) with my NVIDIA GPU (using the 570.144 driver). All other desktop portals and configurations were identical to before.

Relevant Details:

1. Hardware Setup:

   • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 (I suspect this is an NVIDIA only problem, on my AMD GPU I remember not having these issues)
   • Driver: 570.144 (Proprietary driver)
   • Operating System: Arch-based (CachyOS) with KDE Plasma
   • Session Type: Wayland

2. Problem:

   • On Hyprland (Wayland), screen sharing failed, and applications like Vencord, Webcord or Chromium would crash when selecting the screen to share.
   • The error message involved screen_capture_portal_interface.cc and a segmentation fault caused by PipeWire, related to pw_thread_loop_wait().

3. Root Cause:

   • The issue appears to be related to the Hyprland portal and how it interfaces with PipeWire and xdg-desktop-portal. Switching to KDE Plasma Wayland with the same setup fixed the problem.

4. Setup for Fix:

   • The fix was achieved by using KDE Plasma on Wayland rather than Hyprland, where the portal (xdg-desktop-portal-kde) seems to work reliably with PipeWire and screen capturing, while Hyprland's portal still seems buggy.

Suggested Fixes / Improvements:

• Investigate and address potential issues with xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland’s interaction with PipeWire.
• Ensure that the portal correctly handles screen-sharing requests and session creation, as it works fine under KDE Plasma Wayland but not under Hyprland.
• Possible investigation into xdg-desktop-portal-kde as a more stable solution for Hyprland-based setups or improving compatibility for NVIDIA + Wayland under Hyprland.

I dont use Vesktop, but found this due to the same error with 10bit. Screensharing on 8bit works flawlessly on any application (AMD with mesa-git), but with 10bit any screen share attempt fails with the attached logs.

Not sure if relevant, but sharing from my other screen which does run 8bit works without issues. It's really just an issue when shared from actual 10bit, not just if there is a 10bit screen connected.

So for now my workaround is to just fallback to sharing from an 8bit screen (either just sharing from my second screen, or setting my main screen to 8bit too).

For me it turned out my discord was running on my intel gpu and hyprland was running on the Nvidia gpu with Optimus not sure how to get it to work with that on, but I turned off the intel one and it started working
