Programs sometimes stick after terminating

I'm using paplay to play a brief sound after changing the volume with a keybind.

however, the first instance of paplay launcher after opening the app always sticks. Others disappear, unless I launch them while some other sound is still playing. This means that by spamming them indefinitely I can get them to accumulate

Also, the bars are stationary and don't move like they do in pavucontrol (which is what they're supposed to do, I suppose?) and no, it's not because of my theme
