Screen sharing indicator

Hey 👋

A big part of my day is attending meetings and sharing my screen.

I'd love for that to be easier in hyprland by having an indicator showing which part of the screen is being shared atm.

Even better if we can have an easy way to switch the shared portion of the screen or stop it entirely. Maybe some kind of overlay on the screen, or that shows up when a potential target tile is hovered.

Is any of this possible? And do you think it would fit well under the hypr ecosystem?

Depends on what kind of indicator you want. If you simply want a red dot on your status bar, that's doable solely with the status bar. If you want a red rectangle (like Teams on Windows), that could be done either with window rules modifying the border width/color, or with a plugin (that would add a border to the whole screen, not just to windows).

I'm not sure about the switching part, afaik only the requesting app can change that by re-requesting share.

Is there a rule to identify windows within screen sharing? If so, would you have an example? I might have missed it in the docs.

Yeah, this is what I had more in mind. Though, I wasn't sure if this should be built-in to the compositor. To me this seems essential, but I understand that may not be the case to everyone.

I know in Niri we can choose to screenshare a virtual "window" that is just whatever the compositor chooses to put there. Allowing us to switch sharing targets on the fly. Not sure if Hyprland is the same (?)

The red dot on the status bar I figure it can be easily done, and has its value - I was just looking for something a bit more comprehensive, if possible

Looks like there's only https://wiki.hypr.land/IPC/#events-list:~:text=screencast, I thought it would send more events such as the monitor/window being shared.

@vaxerski can that information be passed, or would a plugin have access to that info?

we can pass that info but I was thinking of drawing a red box (disableable) that doesnt show up on the screenshare but highlights the area
