External Monitor Refuses to Run at 100Hz on Hyprland (Works Fine on Plasma Wayland)

System Details

• Laptop Model: HP Victus 15 (Intel i7-12650H, Hybrid Graphics)
• GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050 Mobile + Intel Integrated GPU
• External Monitor: 1920x1080 @ 100Hz (supports 100Hz refresh rate)
• Internal Monitor: Laptop display (various refresh rate)
• Driver: Latest NVIDIA proprietary drivers installed
• Wayland Compositor Tested:
  • Plasma Wayland: External monitor runs consistently at 100Hz (works as expected)
  • Hyprland: External monitor stuck at a lower refresh rate (e.g., 60Hz or 59Hz), refuses to switch to 100Hz

Configuration & Environment

• Hyprland monitor config correctly sets resolution and refresh rate, e.g.:

  monitor=HDMI-A-1,1920x1080@100,1920x0,1

• Environment variables set for NVIDIA offload:

  • LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia
  • __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia
  • __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1
  • __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only

• Kernel boot parameter added:

  • nvidia-drm.modeset=1

• No Optimus Manager installed

• Intel GPU cannot be disabled from BIOS

Problem Description

On Hyprland, the external monitor refuses to run at its native 100Hz refresh rate and defaults to a lower refresh rate. In contrast, the same external monitor works perfectly at 100Hz on Plasma Wayland on the same system and drivers.

Troubleshooting Already Done

• Verified NVIDIA driver version is up-to-date
• Verified Hyprland config file uses correct resolution and refresh rate syntax
• Checked nvidia-smi to confirm NVIDIA GPU is active
• Added recommended kernel parameters and environment variables for NVIDIA offload
• Tried launching Hyprland with NVIDIA offload environment variables set
• Cannot disable Intel GPU or use Optimus Manager

• Is this a known limitation or bug in Hyprland’s handling of hybrid graphics external monitors?
• Are there any additional configuration changes or debugging steps I can try to get the external monitor running at 100Hz?

Very new to this I have searched for this issue but none of the solutions seem to help me and I have spent a lot of time in this

Have you tried hyprctl monitors to check whether the 100Hz mode is supported?

yeah, its not really about modesetting to 100hz, its probably the same thing we and others hit with external monitors on dGPUs (mostly NVIDIA). blitting is slow, and the rendering code might be adding enough delay that page flips miss the v-blanks.

so in short: with vsync on, the client drops to whatever frame rate it can actually flip at, but without vsync, the client isnt as affected.

and yeah im trying my best at figuring out ways to make it happier.

I also experience this issue, getting exactly 50 fps on the ufo test on a 100hz display

laptop screen: 1920x1080@120 (works perfectly fine)
external display: 3440x1440@100

have been experiencing this issue for a while, occasionally trying hyprland out every couple of months

Same here, hyprctl monitor lists [email protected] but I get a notification stating thats my external screen will be at 30Hz instead of 60. AMD GPU on FW16, amdgpu correctly loaded on NixOS.
