Native per-window keyboard layouts

Not really what you are looking for, but I recently made a plugin to switch whole device configs as a windowrule. This is a bit more "native" than the scripts you mentioned, and can also be used to change all input device settings and not just the layout (in my case I needed to switch kb_options). Should work on 0.49.0 or above.

But yeah I agree, a windowrule to just switch the xkb layout (akin to setxkblayout) shouldn't be too difficult to implement, and would be nice to have natively.

@VirtCode to be extra clear, I'm not looking for window rules. That would be nice to have for people who have a use case, but as for me I just want all windows to persist the keyboard layout, such that:

1. My layouts are us,de
2. I open window X and switch to layout de
3. I open window Y, the layout defaults to us
4. I switch back to window X, the layout switches to de (as it's the last layout I had for this window)

This is how hyprland-per-window-layout and also Niri work.

But also, thanks for sharing your plugin! Happy to see attention to these issues :)

Right, only really considered the "windowrule aspect" of it as it is enough for my use case - sorry about that. Might implement dynamically changing the device rule as a dispatcher for the plugin at some point, but that wouldn't really be more native than the scripts in your case.

I would love to see the native implementation, as hyprland-per-window-layout often breaks and misbehaves. For an external tool, it will always be a race behind the main source code.

Such essential functionality should be built-in, as it is done in Niri with track-layout option.

I don't find it essential, and the small amount of people here supports that. hyprland-per-window-layout likely breaks and misbehaves because it's not a plugin. A plugin for this would be a better idea.
