Fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install and had problems installing the generator. Looked around a little bit and found details of the problem and the solution here.

The problem is that the script seems to be looking for the command node and not the nodejs that comes with nodejs package in Ubuntu. The solution is either to sym link the command or install a legacy package that has the other executable. So:

TLDR version:
sudo apt-get install nodejs-legacy

Error log:
`npm ERR! Linux 4.0.5-boot2docker
npm ERR! argv "/usr/bin/nodejs" "/usr/bin/npm" "install" "-g" "hubot" "coffee-script" "yo" "generator-hubot"

npm ERR! Make sure you have the latest version of node.js and npm installed.
npm ERR! If you do, this is most likely a problem with the spawn-sync package,
npm ERR! not with npm itself.
npm ERR! Tell the author that this fails on your system:
npm ERR! node postinstall

npm ERR! npm bugs spawn-sync

npm ERR! npm owner ls spawn-sync
npm ERR! There is likely additional logging output above.`
