What is lemmy.world? Is it a Mastodon server?

After a little more research, it seems that Lemmy is mostly compatible with Mastodon (both using the ActivityPub protocol) but has some differences, which are explained here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LemmyMigration/comments/145zmi0/can_i_use_my_mastodon_account_to_interact_with/

This may be why Whalebird cannot connect.
