Is it possible to set a cap on the number of gaussians the model produces? I understand that I can affect the size by altering training parameters, but ideally I would like to have a cap on the total number of gaussians in the end model.

You can always trim model. (not only in viewport)

Hard cap is very debatable cus how many splat you need depend what you making.
For large terrains/models you need every splat to have good quality.
For small object/models you usually have enough or more that you need.

But having hard cap and don't have control on what part of model you work you ask only for trouble.
