I guess what you're asking for is to detect whether e.g. headphones are plugged in (or wirelessly connected) to an audio device, is that right? If so, I don't think this is supported by PortAudio but you can ask at their website.

I think you'll have to use host-specific APIs to do this. What platform are you on? I see that on macOS you can call AudioObjectAddPropertyListener with kAudioDevicePropertyDeviceIsAlive.
