For me the problem was that the citations were not resolved (I don't know if this is the exact same issue you are facing @Aaron120413). I managed to fix this by deleting all auxiliary files, removing the folder given by biber --cache, and recompiling.

Hope this helps someone else running into this issue.

It seems to be related to the issue described here latex3/latex2e#1684 and https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/735502 . However, none of the fixes worked for me. Removing the cleverref package from kaobook worked for me (I don't need cleveref):
