Exploring Iconography for Ethereum.org

Hi Design Team,

My name is Jonathan Larenas, I’m a designer from Chile currently based in Barcelona.

This is my first time contributing, so I’m still getting used to how things work here.

While exploring the website, I noticed that the “Get ETH” section currently uses generic icons. I think this could be a great opportunity to start an iconography system for Ethereum.

Since the icon use is still relatively minimal, it could be a nice starting point to explore a visual language, test ideas, and (if it resonates) scale it into a full, modular icon system for broader use.

I previously worked designing the custom icons for Stereo App, I’m sharing that reference here in case it’s helpful as a starting point.

This sounds great to me, will also wait for @nloureiro to share his opinion as i know he wants to move away from emojis but I am sure we can find some use of your talents and a common ground! :)

Many of our older pages use emoji style icons such as the get eth page, while the latest page: https://ethereum.org/en/roadmap/ has different style of icons. I wonder whether we should keep both styles (and have them for different purposes) or if you think we should unify to one approach.

This is a great discussion, thank you for reaching out, and for sure, we have an icon/emoji problem on Ethereum.org

My point about not advocating with emojis or colorful icons is the clash of style with the illustrations and images.

So, we have go-to line icons, a mix of custom with Bootstrap open-source icons, like this one on the homepage.

With this in mind, I would love to be challenged on this assumption. Can we have a set of icons that work in pairs with the illustrations?

@nloureiro I totally understand your point, and of course! I'd love to explore this challenge :) I could start working on an initial set of icons as a starting point and share some ideas so we can discuss them together.
