Ignoring values like changefreq and lastmod?

I can't figure out how to just omit these values? I.e if i don't know the change frequency or lastmod it would be nice to be able to just ignore them?

Maybe Google and other search engines just ignores them but well, it would save some space and it bugs me that for example changefreq defaults to always when that simply is not true.
