Integrate MapHubs improvements

Opening a ticket to track improvements that @kriscarle has made at the maphubs/maphubs fork, and how we can integrate those back into Macrocosm.

Short term next step is for me to do some homework on the maphubs codebase. Long term (next 2 months) we will organize a sprint to formally do the work.
