Can't use merged VAE file

I'm using the VAE merger but my results are unusable. I've tried naming it with extensions .pt, .ckpt, .safetensors and the only one that gets selected without errors is the .safetensors one. But when I generate the image has the same colors as if I wasn't using a VAE.
EDIT: It feels like only works with values 0 or 1, which defeats the purpose of merging
EDIT: Never mind, I guess VAE files are very different and give weird results if merging at 0.5
