[BUG] CRC Unstable on Apple Silicon #3349
Comments
@cgruver Do you have any workload deployed on that cluster when it start failing? We don't have M2 machine in the team but have M1 so we can try to reproduce it if you let us know the steps when it happen. |
No workloads are deployed. It generally happens pretty quickly. The first symptom seems to be that the node stops accepting SSH connections. The OpenShift instance will continue to run for a while, but then will eventually stop responding as well. The crc machine has to be deleted after, and a new one created. I'll try to catch it and upload all of the logs. |
It's quite surprising that the VM can't be force restarted after this start happening :-/ |
OK. Here's one way to reproduce it: crc delete
crc start After it starts: eval $(crc podman-env)
podman images Result: Cannot connect to Podman. Please verify your connection to the Linux system using `podman system connection list`, or try `podman machine init` and `podman machine start` to manage a new Linux VM
Error: unable to connect to Podman. failed to create sshClient: Connection to bastion host (ssh://[email protected]:2222/run/user/1000/podman/podman.sock) failed.: ssh: handshake failed: EOF vfkit.log [ 760.952531] hrtimer: interrupt took 117543762 ns

If you attempt to restart crc after the above failure. The same ostree errors as above repeat in vfkit.log. The cluster cannot restart and must be deleted. |
Ah this one is a different issue, the first time the cluster stops/starts must be a clean shutdown or it won't be able to restart. If you manage to do |
The above method for reproducing the issue does not always work. Sometimes the cluster will run for a while before it quits accepting SSH. After it quits accepting SSH, OpenShift will still run for a while too. Then suddenly stop. I'll keep playing with it and upload any interesting logs. |
Here's a vfkit.log snippet that might have something useful. I started crc and let it idle for a few minutes. [ 630.615006] ------------[ cut here ]------------

Yeah, it's not always immediate. I was able to login to the local registry, and run several oc commands. Then, after sitting idle for just a couple of minutes, it died again. I had done a clean restart before the test, so I was able to start it again. |

It looks OK.

This is a disk corruption this time, this is different from the initial issue you were seeing. |
I saw disk corruption periodically with When it happens, you have to delete the VM. Otherwise, when it boots, it drops straight into the emergency shell. |

The thread starting at Code-Hex/vz#63 (comment) and issue Code-Hex/vz#13 hints at some potential memory corruption coming from Code-Hex/vz, this may be related to what you are seeing. |
@cfergeau I might question the maturity; we need additional tests to run on this, one of the complaints I had an reason to allow different workloads/enablement, such as minikube, etc. like a machine-driver. |

@jdloft Give us a bit more info. For example: I am running on an M2 MacBook Air with 24GB of RAM. MacOS Version: 13.0.1 I can reproduce this issue by giving CRC 16GB of RAM. It will reliably crash within a few minutes under little to no user application load. With 12GB of RAM it is mostly stable, but will still occasionally crash. Given the nature of the error that you posted, I suspect you will see similar behavior. |
Nothing special. I deleted/started the machine 4 or so times yesterday. First boot came up and I was able to access the console and start installing an operator and it crashed during the process. Every try after that failed on first boot and I wasn't able to get to the console. I'm running the same macOS version: 13.0.1 on an M1 Pro Macbook Pro with 16 GB of RAM. CRC is configured with the default and minimum amount of memory (9216). |
JFYI, this issue still persists in MacOS Apple M2 CPU It is somewhat stable if I give CRC 12GB of RAM, but fails very quickly at 16GB of RAM. There are minimal workloads on the MacBook. It is not under enough memory pressure to cause paging. [ 592.642798] Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000030

I've started a crc instance with its memory set to $max_mem - 4GB , and started a light payload in a loop (an odo nodejs example application), but I did not get any crashes. |
@cfergeau I don't know of any traces available from the GUI app. FWIW, the smaller I make the VM on my machine, the more stable it is. So, if you are running with only 4GB of RAM I would not expect any crashes. On my MacBook Air with 24GB of RAM crc will crash fairly quickly if I give it 16GB of RAM. If I give it 12GB of RAM it is more stable, but I can crash it by making my MacBook busy. I suspect, but have no direct evidence, that the issue is somewhere in the interaction of the VM with the hypervisor. Something to do with vfkit maybe? |
@cgruver can you get same result with podman bundle also (which use higher kernel version than rhel) and for openshift bundle we do upgrade to RHEL-9 kernel without changing the user stack. Another thing we can try is microshift bundle (only available internally) which is also on RHEL-9 and check if same thing happen. |
I used 'max_mem - 4GB', which is 60GB on my system for the VM. |
@praveenkumar testing with MicroShift is a good idea. I'll try the crc Podman bundle too. I've not used it since I have Podman already on my MacBook. |

Interesting. I've been running the podman profile for a few hours now. Ran several REALLY big builds. I've got gopls running, which is a RAM hog, plus Safari and VS Code. The podman profile seems stable. I gave the VM 16GB of RAM, but it's not really using much more than 9GB. There's not an arm64 build of OKD yet, so I can't try it with FCOS. |
Unfortunately no, okd-project/okd#1165 @cgruver I am still interested to see microshift bundle testing if you can do. |
So far, testing with the MicroShift bundle appears to be stable. Uptime is now at 4 hours. The crc VM has 16GB of RAM I'm running VSCode on my MacBook with the Go extension enabled, so gopls is sucking up a lot of RAM. I've got a Cassandra cluster + Stargate deployed on MicroShift with 4GB and 1GB of heap respectively. |
Update: MicroShift ran for 9+ hours with a Cassandra cluster + Stargate. No issues observed. |
Testing the latest crc with OpenShift 4.12. Will close this if it appears stable. |

While getting in
The important is I'm doing each time pretty same workflow. Even when I purge openshift from the system and install again. The point is that deployment is made using openshift pipeline. Then I stop the session and each time the same issue. So on the first clean start it is working till I have tested exactly the same on windows machine and there issue is not present. |
@creaux can you open a new issue and provide the exact steps you follow to hit this issue, full logs, .. ? |
CRC will run on my MacBook Air M2, but it is not stable.
It will often fail to start a fresh instance, and does not seem to be able to ever restart a stopped instance.
Upon investigation of logs, it looks like something causes a kernel panic that results in the VM rebooting.
Even when OpenShift is running, the VM will eventually stop accepting ssh connections, which results in Podman not working.
The output is:
