CWA-QR-Code-Checkin feature should also work on older devices #443
Comments
There is a specific open issue for Android 5.0 Lollipop support which is tracked under corona-warn-app/cwa-app-android#1799. |
@dsarkar High story here can you please assign me on this |
Am I wrong or is the ENF downloading the event keys? |
CWA is downloading and checking event keys. ENF handles only bluetooth RPIs and TEKs |
Thanks! So this would be possible! Nice! |
Thank you very much for the proposal. Story internally set to high priority. Best wishes, DS Internal Tracking ID: EXPOSUREAPP-6359 |
Hello, i originally filed "compatible ipod Touch on iOS >12.5 barred from installing" ( corona-warn-app/cwa-app-ios#3775 ). In corona-warn-app/cwa-app-ios#3775 (comment) i have just laid out a path to leverage the existing onboarding process to make iOS devices running >12.5, but missing GAEN, compatible with the current version of the app, with what i believe is only a little bit of work. As CWA check-in is now a requirement to enter some locations, and increased check-ins are extremely desirable in the current state in the pandemic, i believe expanding the number of devices able to do so would be very helpful. Much thanks to the team and to the person ( @thomasaugsten ?) implementing this. I hope my proposal can be of help, if only a little. |
@dsarkar i do not want to be over-demanding, but could you say what "Story internally set to high priority", as you wrote 11 months ago, actually means? Can I expect this to be dealt with at any time, or is this abandoned? Thanks for all your work with the app, but regarding this high priority issue I'd very much appreciate some form of a status update. I can't use the app and would like to know if i will ever be able to. |
Current Implementation
The current Corona-Warn-App is compatible with iPhone 5s and newer and Android 6. It requires Bluetooth LE to work.
Suggested Enhancement
The QR-Code feature doesn't necessarily require BLE or a specific OS-side framework. It could therefore run on much older smartphones.
Expected Benefits
Supporting older smartphones would increase adoption among older and financially disadvantaged people.
Many older citizens currently don't use CWA because they would have to buy a new smartphone to use the feature, when they could just instead use older phones from their relatives. Luca App is compatible with Android 5, thus having a larger potential user base, but doesn't offer the same privacy guarantees, also it can be DDOSed by posting QR-Codes online, thus reducing usability for vulnerable people. Privacy should be available to as many citizens as possible no matter their financial situation, especially If the application is funded with public money.
