Should throw exception for path checks that don't match protobuf spec #3

Right now we ignore paths that do not match the underlying protobuf proto. In a should_now we pass, and in a should we simply fail an rspec assertion. We really want to throw an exception indicating that the path being checked in no-way matches the proto format.
