Confirmed that the behaviour regression is with using the latest pydata-sphinx-theme 0.16.1 patch release.

Also, this is not the case with 0.16.0

There is another pydata-sphinx-theme behaviour regression related to 0.16.0 and already documented by the community, see:

@tkoyama010 Akin to pyvista pyvista/pyvista#7094 we're going to max pin pydata-sphinx-theme < 0.16.0 to restore full functionality and also monitor the situation for progress/fixes.
