notification badge not going away once i have read the messages on android

Steps to reproduce

1. Do not have the app open
2. recieve a message
3. open the app
4. read message
5. close app
6. the red number in the corner of the app still shows how many messages you got (for example one)

Current behavior

the notification badge does not go away after reading message.

Expected behavior

the notification and badge should go away
