Some patterns require a volume to be defined for some strokes. The most common examples are crescendo/decrescendo (for example Karla Break), but there are also some more complex examples (for example Hardcore Break).

Right now the stroke volume can be specified through the volumeHack property. This was a temporary quick solution for the problem. This solution should be thought over and either replaced by a better mechanism, or, if the current mechanism is good enough, at least renamed to volume. The UI should allow users to specify the volume when composing a pattern.
