It's theoretically possible to use pre-existing vector tiles as a data source and then render that data to a raster tile. I got this sort of working at one point, but you need to know the zoom levels of the original vector tiles in order to perform dynamic modifications that Mapnik doesn't automatically perform when setting a bounding box.

This would be interesting. I was just here looking for something somewhat similar to this. I have a situation where I need to render raster tiles with dynamic styling. There are too many potential layers to define them all in the MML so I've been looking for ways to possibly render to vector, modify the style, then re-render to raster. Do you think that's a possibility?
