Compiling Tasmota for ESP32 using Gitpod #18745

Hi all,

Compilation steps for ESP32 with new options enabled. In this example, I added support for PCF8574 and Atlas Scientific EZO chips.

Here's the big steps I did to compile:

Starting a new workspace here: https://gitpod.io/new#https://github.com/arendst/Tasmota
Open /tasmota/my_user_config.h and /tasmota/user_config_override.h (rename sample if needed)

only modify user_config_override.h
copy the lines you want to add to your firmware from my_user_config.h to user_config_override.h
Remove the // comments where you need to enable a fonction

Run the compile: platformio run -e tasmota32s3 (or tasmota32 or tasmota for esp8266)
After a successful compile, go to : build_output folder and find the file tasmota32s3 (same name as compilation command) and download it
Then, using the web interface, upload the new firmware.

Example

I needed to add the support for the PCF8574 and some EZO chips.

So I copied those lines from my_user_config.h to user_config_override.h

and removed the // to enable them
Then I compiled with : platformio run -e tasmota32 on the command line

The firmware was in /build_output/firmware/tasmota.bin
So I downloaded and used the web interface to upload and update the firmware to my needs.

You should not even look for firmware.bin, but find the relevant file in build_output. Nowhere else. The name should be something like tasmota32s3.bin, or for initial flashing tasmota32s3.factory.bin.

in this message from 5/29/2023 you mentioned "or for initial flashing tasmota32s2.factory.bin" what exactly is the *factory.bin" and
what is the proper procedure for its use ?

The binaries with .factory in the name are for initial wired flashing, and the ones without are for doing upgrades (typically OTA) when already having Tasmota on the device. The .factory binaries can also come with a pre-populated file system.

The .factory binaries also include a bootloader, partition scheme and the safeboot partition used when upgrading.

Hi @SimonFili
Trying to enable ir remote by adding this line #define USE_IR_REMOTE_FULL
but it keeps failing to compile regardless of which board I'm using (esp8266/esp32).
Thought on this? Probably some additional configuration with gitpod?

Gidpod is nothing more than VSCode running in a docker with a Web UI on top
What happens in Github and VSCode should be the same

As you don't give much clues on what you've done and what you get as errors, it's impossible to help you

As you can see below, it works fine for me, doing nothing more than the minimum required

Your Gitpod environment may not be clean
Please delete folders
.pio
.cache
And run the build command again
