A 5 character address field always follow the `$` sign while `hh` is a two hexadecimal checksum. A NMEA 0183 sentence can have a maximum of 80 characters plus a carriage return and a line feed. Let us examine now a GPS NMEA 0183 example sentence:
The documentation states that the maximum message length is 80 characters plus the two terminators. However the example right after is already 90 characters long.
I don't have the standard at hand but I believe that it's 80 characters not including the commas. So that statement should either be removed, or clarified a bit better.
