custom mod_utils and vscode

Hello all,

I'm referencing this documentation on utility modules. I have searched a lot but can't find any references to my issue, so I suspect I am ignorant of some basic thing....

I have written some common code and put it in
mycollection/plugins/module_utils/mycommon.py

I am trying to use the utility module in my module in the same project that I am developing
from ansible.module_utils.mycommon import myclass

vsCode complains that the module is not found.
Import "ansible. module_utils.mycommon" could not be resolved Pylance (reportMissingImports)

I'm sure there is something that I'm missing by making this a local module and not having it in .ansible but I'm trying to learn how to develop and use the module_utils.

Any help is much appreciated.

I ended up symlinking from the python site-packages/ansible_collections to my dev directory.
