ESM error with Yarn PNP (despite "module": "commonjs")

I'm seeing the following error:

TypeError [ERR_UNKNOWN_FILE_EXTENSION]: Unknown file extension ".ts" for /Users/matt/dev/org-repo/orgs/monotonous/packages/mnt-pkg-cli/src/bin/mnt.ts

This is with a PNP managed repo. Discussion with Yarn Discord suggests this ticket is a blocker for use. To be honest, i'm a little lost with the interdependencies so hoping for some confirmation on the ts-node side about possible workarounds
