Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term, progressive lung disease that makes breathing difficult. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are types of COPD. Damage to the lungs from COPD can't be reversed. Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing or a chronic cough.
Rescue inhalers and inhaled or oral steroids can help control symptoms and minimize further damage.
Use Case
COPD should be suspected if a person has typical symptoms of shortness of breath, wheezing or a chronic cough, and the diagnosis confirmed by a breathing test called spirometry, which measures how the lungs are working. To avoid the high morbidity and mortality associated with this condition, it must be diagnosed and treated promptly.
Benefits
People living with COPD must be given information about their condition, treatment and self-care to help them to stay as active and healthy, they can take steps to improve the outcome of their disease and modify its progression. Treatment of COPD can help in controlling symptoms, improve the quality of life, and reduce exacerbations and mortality.
