Warnings

There are many, many warnings when compiling core. This number should be reduced, also to make sure that the warnings are not indicating bugs.

Unused parameters are apparently not straightforward to "cleanly" suppress. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1486904/how-do-i-best-silence-a-warning-about-unused-variables has some suggestion where (void)param; might be the cleanest.
