Zellij support

I was so hyped to start using it, but very quickly realized that it doesn't work inside zellij, which I opt-in to use by default every time I open a terminal window.

There is zellij-org/zellij#2814, which is up for a long time. But yazi does work, because it has a fallback option: https://github.com/jstkdng/ueberzugpp.

Do you think you can support this fallback option too?

Ueberzugpp is significantly worse to use, but more importantly a lot more work to support. It could maybe happen down the line, but the only reason this was even feasible for me to make this plugin was the kitty unicode image stuff being so easy to use. Sixel is similar in that i could maybe do it, but it just isn't as good (auto cropping for horiz/virt scroll, no extra work when text is moved etc) as the kitty unicode image protocol.

I would of course be happy to get any PRs that add that but it would be a lot of work. It would probably best to instead rework image.nvim to use the kitty unicode stuff and then port this plugin to image.nvim? I'd have to take a look at image.nvim's internals more to know.

Then I guess I would just wait for zellij to support pass through of the escape sequences. Maybe I can try do that myself, as it still looks like no one is working on it. Though I'm not sure how hard it would be for me.

Hmm, I saw image.nvim, and I don't remember why I'm not using it. Maybe I just haven't got time for it or something else.

Afaict, it is not trivial. From my testing, literally only ghostty and kitty support it properly.

In the comments some say that tmux supports pass through, which makes supporting graphical protocol easy, as you literally don't have to implement it. You just need to listen to the escape sequence of it and then pass it to the shell or terminal verbatim.

Tmux does indeed pass it through to the host terminal emulator if you ask it to, which my plugin does if thinks it's in tmux, but the terminal emulator does need it. (

Opened an issue for allowing passthrough in zellij: zellij-org/zellij#3954

Most kitty image stuff would be at least a little funky without zellij doing some work, but the unicode stuff I use should Just Work™ if the escape sequences could be passed straight to the terminal emulator.
