AOD works fine in every other situation. Esp. while charging normally on usb-c-power supply at home.

I think you may have enabled the android screen saver, it gets activated in docking mode.
Go to Android Settings -> Display -> Screen saver and disable it.

I just drove 2,700 miles across the country with it. Mine stays on so long that Android Auto starts complaining that my phone performance will improve if I turn off the screen.

I don't have screensaver enabled. @EasternPA So did you just leave your phone on and display active while driving?
Issue here is that xdrips AoD which is only visible when phone is not in use/display is "sleeping" will disappear as soon as the phone is connected to a car by USB.

Issue still exists.
