Improve and redesign the network view

At various points we've discussed improving the network view. Now that we've completed a redesign of both the circle views, the network view really feels like it's lagging behind and it could be so useful and cool!

Here's a placeholder issue for now. The task will be to really think through what the network view could be like, so let's collect bits of feedback and ideas here in the meantime.
