Core Dump Service

Example Brief

This example demonstrates how to configure the core dump service in ADF. By referencing a non-existent assembly instruction, this example creates a crash, then uploads the core dump data to the HTTP server which receives and parses the core dump information.

Environment Setup

Hardware Required

This example runs on the boards that are marked with a green checkbox in the table. Please remember to select the board in menuconfig as discussed in Section Configuration below.

Build and Flash

Default IDF Branch

This example supports IDF release/v3.3 and later branches. By default, it runs on ADF's built-in branch $ADF_PATH/esp-idf.

Configuration

The default board for this example is ESP32-Lyrat V4.3. If you need to run this example on other development boards, select the board in menuconfig, such as ESP32-Lyrat-Mini V1.1.

First, configure the Wi-Fi connection information. Go to menuconfig > Example Configuration and fill in the Wi-Fi SSID and Wi-Fi Password.

Then, configure the URI of the HTTP server (PC) that receives the core dump data. Please make sure the development board and the HTTP server are connected to the same Wi-Fi LAN. For example, if the LAN IP address of the HTTP server is 192.168.5.72, fill in http://192.168.5.72:8000/upload in menuconfig > Example Configuration.

Build and Flash

Build the project and flash it to the board, then run monitor tool to view serial output (replace PORT with your board's serial port name):

idf.py -p PORT flash monitor

To exit the serial monitor, type Ctrl-].

How to Use the Example

Example Functionality

  • In this example, the Python script needs to be run under Python 2.7. The development board and the HTTP server are also required to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

  • First, set the environment variables $IDF_PATH and $ADF_PATH required by the Python script in advance.

  • Then, download esp32_rom.elf to $ADF_PATH/examples/system/coredump/tools directory.

  • Run the Python script coredump_http_server.py in the tools directory to receive and parse the core dump HTTP server. The Python script log is as follows:

  • After the example starts running, it first connects to Wi-Fi. After the Wi-Fi connection succeeds, if the example is executed for the first time, it will deliberately refer to a non-existent assembly instruction to create a crash. The core dump service will write the crash data to flash, save it, and restart the device. Then, the core dump service will check the last crash and finally upload the data to the HTTP server. The log of the core steps is as follows:
