Memory usage and/or workflow needs work

Seems it currently requires 16 GB of memory just to run DC alignment, single-threaded, and then people just leave it running forever, idle on CPU but sitting on memory. That's OK on your personal computer, but it's not a way to work on shared, interactive resources.

Probably this is specific to certain non-default branches in this repo, unclear which ones.
