Overnight between June 24 and June 25, a monument to the 1st Colorado Cavalry was removed by direct action. The plaque includes a commemoration of the Sand Creek Massacre as a 'battle won'. In addition to that commemoration, the statue itself may have been intended as a representation of Col. John Chivington, who led the Sand Creek Massacre.

The monument has been controversial for years, though the first public apology by the state for the Sand Creek Massacre did not occur until 2014.
