Please give and example of file usage, i.e open file, get a string, put a string, close a file

Unfortunately, John Walker has died and won't be answering your question.

There are examples in the "examples" directory, but as ATLAST was designed to be an internal scripting language, it doesn't have file I/O built in. I did write some file I/O primitives for Pez (which started life as a port of ATLAST to 64-bit Linux, but is no longer compatible), you could probably take some of those, but the language is a bit idiosyncratic.
