the textures in charac01.emb are the character selection portraits
when unpack, edit and repack with embpack.exe the game freezes
when the textures are edited manualy with a hex editor it loads the textures fine

embpack did not have any way to activate filename support, which these EMBs rely on.

Verify if the referenced commit fixes the issue. If it doesn't then it means file ordering is relevant and needs to be handled in some way.

Seems like the internal order is important, but we have no way of handling that just yet. The extracted files will need new filenames to maintain the internal order in the EMB.

when i open the original and edited emb in a hex editor repacked with your new update and scroll to the far end you see that in the repack it is alpaticaly ordered and in the original its ordere differently
for example the HUM portrait is at first place
