The help we need for both Kali as well as Ubuntu:

  • CloudInit needs to work for on-premises machines. AutomatedLabUnattended is prepared, but the docs with regards to actually using it are not great. I didn't get it to work
  • Machines should be reliably domain-joined (if configured)
  • Machines should accept remote commands via SSH and the PowerShell subsystem. This is bearable on Azure as we can at least configure the authorized keys during deployment, on Hyper-V? Not so much. Hence: CloudInit (or any other means of an unattended config)
