FreshDesk

https://2i2c.freshdesk.com/a/tickets/2787

Context

Jeremy is requesting 5/10GB memory options since the current 2GB option is too restrictive for instructors. He would like this to be done "ASAP, ... days to weeks if feasible". This request is dated 23 Jan.

Definition of done

  • New hub set up with similar config to default-prod hub
  • No new nodepool, can work in the same pool
  • 5GB memory limit

@GeorgianaElena has provided her assessment on Slack:

So, when they say "Request to provision an additional hub type of up to 5GB/10GB" they are referring to a new hub that will allow users up to 5GB or 10 GB of memory, right?
So what they need from us is to provide this hub with access to large enough machines that could be used for these new limits. I would say that we would need the aproximate number of users that will use these machines and estimate from there.
Or even better I think, we could find the azure machine type counterparts of the ones we have standardized in gcp/aws and recommend those. Also, I believe this is something we can offer on their existing hubs, as a profile option, after we've added support for these larger machines (though I don't know exactly what machines utoronto has access atm and might already have big enough instance types).
Hope this made a bit of sense 😅

Let's make a new hub that's the same as the jupyter hub, with a bigger amount of RAM. We don't need to provision a new nodepool, we can simply let them ride out on this.

So this is a new hub with:

  1. Same config as the existing default hub
  2. More RAM (let's start with 5)
  3. No new nodepool

I know I mentioned this should be a profile list option during the meeting - I was wrong, sorry about that.

I have opened #5503 as a draft as @jnywong pointed out in Slack that UofT use their own managed home page and we should figure out where this hub will be pointing to.

It's currently available at https://highmem.utoronto.2i2c.cloud/hub/home

Once we have clarity on domains, that PR should be quick to update and merge

^I've followed up in https://2i2c.freshdesk.com/a/tickets/2787 asking for this information.

They are testing the hub and so far so good, but still need to get the URL to redirect to and I have re-prompted for this info!

I'm gonna split off the final sub-task, since there is somewhat of an external dependency of us waiting on a response.
